The red gets direct 12v battery power and the blue is on the negative of the coil. Found out the white wire from the fitech needs 12v when key on "and when" cranking. once I got that wire hooked to the right voltage it fires up first turn of the key.

Tuning at first start is not a good idea. It shouldn't die. Most likely you are not getting a good +12V to the unit. The ECU doesn't respond well to a weak electrical system.
